What to Highlight in a Model Resume
Every campaign is looking for a specific model and models understand that getting the job is about much more than just looking pretty. Your headshots will speak for themselves; you need to highlight the fact that you can do the job. If you have any especially impressive experience, like modeling for Los Angeles Fashion Week or New York Fashion Week, then put this experience front and center.
Structure of a Model Resume
Before you start looking at resume writing tips, you should decide on a resume format. Your options are the chronological resume format, the functional resume format and the combination resume format; each will highlight different parts of your resume. From here, you can start filling in your resume sections.
Header
Your resume header should include contact information. This may include your phone number, email address and professional social media links, including a link to your portfolio or your LinkedIn.
Resume summary/objective
At the top of your resume, you’ll write a short two- tr three-sentence paragraph introducing the hiring manager to your resume. This will be either a resume summary, which is best for experienced individuals and includes information about your achievements or a resume objective, which is best for less-experienced individuals and includes information about your skills and education.
Skills
Modeling skills are often different from hard skills and soft skills in other industries, note that you should include all three types in your resume. This is especially true because there are many different types of models and the type of modeling you do on a regular basis will impact the skills you choose. Here are a few bullet points an aspiring model might include in a skills section.
- Time management
- Communication skills
- Walking fashion runways
- Posing for photoshoots
- Team player
- Interpersonal skills
- Makeup skills
- Working with stylists
Work history
In your work experience section, you can include all experience you have as a professional model. Remember to tailor your experience to the specific job you’re applying to; an aspiring runway model will want to list more live modeling experience, for example. Additionally, remember to follow a reverse-chronological format, so you’re putting the most recent jobs first.
Education
A fashion model resume will need at least a high school diploma. However, if you have any other educational experience, you can also include that in your education section. A professional resume can include certifications of all kinds, including education experience.
Do’s and Don’ts for a Model Resume
-
Do:
- Read the job description completely before you apply for a job. It’s best for you to reflect on what you see in the description, so reading it first is a great step.
- Consider creating a portfolio for all your modeling work. You can easily create a portfolio website to show off modeling work to a potential employer.
- Add as much modeling experience as you can from as many different genres as possible. This can demonstrate your ability to switch between types of modeling.
-
Don’t:
- Send in a non-professional headshot. It’s important that you invest in a professional headshot if you’re going to send them.
- Leave off any college degrees you have. Even if they’re not degrees in a modeling-adjacent field, they can still show dedication.
